Successes this year

Successful Program Review was smooth and both reviewers enjoyed the day with us as well as gave us valuable insights and critique. Full report will be shared in the Fall by the Dean.

GTA program
An extremely postive move to using GTAs for Leadership (Sands) and Current Issues (Parker). Next year will be taking third year research to the same model 2 hour lecture and 2 hour discussion with 5 GTAs!
Student evaluations are exceptional, GTAs experiences has been exceptional and faculty have been positive. WIN-WIN-WIN _plus Win for budget as saved 1.25 FTE facutly time by using GTAs this way.

Workload NEUM work
System is in Year 4 of existance and now makes the workload more transparent and accessible. See your dept chair I drive folder for copy of the PDF file on 2010 Spring and Fall assignments.

Preceptor Database
In response to new CCNE Standards IIE Preceptos, are academically and experientially qualified for their role in assisting in the achievement of the mission, goals, and expected student outcomes. Our MIS group with Hua Lin taking the Lead programmer role has created a fantastic system.

Committment of Student Assessment Coordinator for Summer and Fall
Elizabeth Taliaferro-Jones continuing to move us into the future with student assessment. With the purchase of new Simulation Scenarios

School Assessment Coordinator
Elizabeth Friberg, DNP! will be continuing to move us into a good spot for SACs mid point review with PO and SLOs which are housed in the program committee.

Summer Session
More classes than ever now being offered in the Summer making us a year round program in every aspect, PHD, DNP, MSN, CNL and BSN including RNBSN Patho.

Book Club: Educating Nurses: A Radical Call for Transformation May 11 1-4 PM

3. Rodiquez summer research funding funded by Rodiquez family and providing funding for 3 students of summer assistance.

Supporting Simulation as a technique, not a technology! School will be using Elsevier simulation scenarios for ob and peds this summer and move to med surg and assessment in the fall.

Supporting the School of Nursing to use Elluminate. Used funding from Summer Alumni Association to provide faculty development support of Instructional Designer for using the Elluminate as a pedagogy, not a technology!

Our enrollment goal is 681 = 25% growth from 2004

We are at 651! Stabilzing 4^th year at 88, growing CNL to 32, next phase is PhD growth

I will be hosting several ROUNDTABLES on the 2010 Carnegie book, Educating Nurses: A call for Radical Transformation by Benner, Sutphen, Leonard and Day! All are invited! The Dean purchased 10 copies so please see your program director when ready to read the book.

Summer Session, as chair of Summer Session, I can tell you our Summer Session is thriving! We now offer more courses and more faculty involved in one way or another. Just in the last 5 years we have moved to year round programs for Third Year Transfers, CNL year 1 and year 2, MSN and DNP. We know PhD students are always year round!

Graduate Teaching Assistants

I now supervise a GTA program with 20 GTAs. Exciting this year is how we have moved to a true GTA model of mentoring our best graduate students. Judy Sands and now Barbara Parker have carried a large part of that with mentoring the 5 break out leaders for the 4^th year class. This has been a tremendous positive change in that program. Look for one of our GTAs to be awarded a University GTA award at Hooding.

Enrollment is steady and growing!

Evaluation Plan is in good shape, we will hear Program Director reports in March and April (ask about NCLEX, certification rates, graduation benchmarks etc. These are your committees and I believe the entire faculty has a stake, not just those who teach a course in the program. All Ships Rise).

UVA Program Review is almost ready to send to the External Reviewers. I have been excited to add the Appreciative Inquiry document to this binder. HOLD April 19 and 20 to meet and hear them. Brenda is working on the schedule.

Conversations on Educating Nurses

Near the end of the semester we will be hosting some round table discussions of the material from the new book: Educating Nurses: A call for radical transformation by Benner, Sutphen, Leonard, & Day, (2010) published by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

As preparation, I will be posting a few quotes from the book to stimulate our thinking and help us get excited about having the conversation!

A central goal of nursing education is for the learner to develop an attuned, response-based practice and capacity to quickly recognize the nature of whole situations in terms of most pressing and least pressing concerns.

Formation

The authors suggest that faculty and students make a shift from an emphasis on socialization and role taking to an emphasis on formation.

What implications does this have for our program?
How do we shift from a focus on role to a focus on formation? Should we reexamine our Role course for APN students? Do we offer enough reflection in the Current Issues and Leadership courses?

If it is .. and I quote again....clear that furnishing an experiential learning environment and reflection on that experiential learning across the nursing curriculum supports formation (p. 89),

then is it important for our programs to evaluate how well we offer, guide, support and use reflection across the experience.

Reflect upon ways you use reflection in your teaching practice to support formation experiences for the student.

Reminder:
The University of Virginia no longer uses students' social security numbers as identifiers. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act prohibits public posting of grades so that students and their grades may be identified. Specifically, we may not used social security numbers or parts thereof in posting grades.

International Planning and Site visit to establish GBI program with Distinguished Alum

Dr. Emily Drake and I travelled to the Grand Bahama Island with our host, Dr. Mary DeLashmutt, UVASON distinguished alumni 2009. Dr. DeLashmutt invites the UVASON to become Global Health Partners as the Grand Bahama Island or GBI program. We are exploring the site for Community Health in both CNL track of the MSN program, the BSN program and potential for other Masters tracks. Dr. Dawn Rigney will make a followup visit in July with CNL students and will look for sustainable projects.

The GBI program fits the guiding principles established by the UVASON International Committee.

Guidling Principles for UVASON International Experiences

• The GBI programs for education and/or research will be responsive to healthcare needs and priorities that were identified in-region

• The GBI program will include aspects of actual service to the community along with learning and/or research (ie service learning programs)

• The GBI program will not only benefit our students, but will work toward developing in-region capacity – i.e. training and/or developing opportunities for ongoing professional development for in-region providers

• The GBI program will lay the foundation for long-term learning, research and service opportunities and relationships,with the potential for UVASON recruitment of other faculty and students into these and other projects

CCNE NOTIFICATION

We were notified in writing on November 17 that the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) reviewed the continuous improvement progress report submitted by the baccalaureate degree program in nursing and master's degree program in nursing at the University of Virginia and determined that the programs continue to meet all accreditation standards.

The next on-site evaluation is scheduled for Fall 2013. We will submit a self study in Fall 2012.

Congratulations Program Directors and all faculty and staff and students in these programs.

If you are teaching a practicum or precepted clinical in the Spring, please refer to the faculty staff handbook for guidance and policies/procedures. In particular 1.4.1 and 1.4.3 apply to clinical contracts.

1.04.3: Contract Request Form for Student Clinical Experiences

The process for requesting a contract with a clinical site is as follows:

• Ensure a contract hasn’t already been negotiated by checking the clinical site contracts database. The link is

• If there isn’t a contract, either the student or faculty member should complete the contract request form. All of the information requested is needed. The link for the form is https://secure.nursing.virginia.edu/ClinicalContracts/Request.aspx

• Allow eight weeks to process a standard contract and twelve to sixteen weeks to process a custom contract. Note: large medical centers and federal agencies almost always have custom contracts; smaller hospitals and family practices typically accept the standard contract.

• The clinical site coordinator (Devonia Love) will contact the student and faculty member once the contract has been finalized.

• Students should contact the faculty member, not the clinical site coordinator, regarding the status of the contract. The faculty member and student are ultimately responsible for determining when to select another clinical site (if/when contract negotiations can not be completed).

We have received Jefferson Trust funding for an innovative project to build teams of faculty researchers, graduate students and our brightest and best undergraduates. Starting in January we will create Round table opportunities for students to sign up to work with researchers, will complete Popular Ridge low ropes experience then competitive process for Summer 2010!

Working with Patricia Vaughn and HSL on mobile resources for Nursing faculty and students via Ipod Touch and Iphones technology. Notified October 17 that we received almost 3K to pilot this project.

Academics Special Projects:
Epic Care unfolds as planned

Jefferson Trust Project for Undergraduate Research Roundtables, connections to mentors and summer funding for small teams. Look for details from Brian Reed, Curry PhD Intern coordinating this project.

Resources: We have a target of 64 CNL, CNL steering reports max accommodation at 50. CNL faculty requested a mechanism to allow RN's to enter program to allow for growth without the pre licensure courses.
I notified faculty org chair of my willingness to set up the site my June 1. Faculty are responsible for both the curriculum and the admissions decisions. I created the mechanism for application. CNL coordinator presented Program of Study to both retreats in May and to the program committees in October.

Recourse issues: Dsplacing 6-10 new CNLs with new CNLS who would not need the pre licensure component, saving 7 groups and 2 lab/skills sections which are the equivalent to WLU for 3 full time faculty.

Questions posed to me in May:
Do we have to increase enrollment?
Yes

Is this a new program?
No, this would not be a new program, but a entry point into the existing CNL which would have a program of study to be reviewed by the faculty.

Status:
A task force has been appointed by the MSN/DNP program committee to finalize the program of study and any curriculum and advising needs.

Online Tools for Distributed Learning
At Noon on Thursday, October 29 in the CLIC (Third Floor Ruffner Hall)

As the University considers the future, there is an increasing focus on distance learning and distributed education. Online synchronous tools with multi-way video, audio, and desktop sharing are crucial elements in this future. Three schools at the University – Engineering, Nursing, and the School of the Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS) – are using Elluminate Live to implement major online initiatives.

In this special Tea and Technology session, Gail Hunger, SCPS Director of Instructional Design and Technology, will describe how Elluminate is being used to implement online programs. Senior executives from Elluminate who are collaborating with participating schools within the University will also be available to discuss online learning. Pedagogical and technical features will be discussed, with a demonstration of specific capabilities. Through a partnership with the School of Engineering, Elluminate licenses are being made available to Curry faculty members and students who wish to explore use of Ellumninate in their own teaching.

@UVASON has access to a new tool that allows the user to record a talk and save it for later viewing. Faculty using Elluminate this semester: Barbero, Manning, Drake. IF you are interested in using a tool that allows you to present synchronously, let me know. This is a great technology for PC to PC communication synchronously. It is less useful when not everyone has a PC and you have people in the room without a PC (they don't get to use the poll for example). It makes it difficult to manage the PC, the remote learners and the learners in the room. The preferred approach is to have everyone with a PC and headset log in from wherever they are.

I will make one of the talks Emily Drake and I are recording for the MIT (managing information technology) students available for others to see! OASS will be using Elluminate for orientation this summer. Think of other ways you can use a recording of your lecture!

Academic Programs (From Assoc. Dean Farrell)

This year we graduated 118 NEW NURSES (includes 4th year and CNL)! Record numbers are employed at the UVA Health System.

We celebrate one full year in the new Claude Moore Nursing Education Building and have been working on McLeod Hall Renovations where you will soon see Java City, Bleeker Street cafe and commons areas for faculty, staff and students from all disciplines to meet for coffee and lunch.

Celebrations:
- We have changed our curriculum after offering a special workshop on Genetics/Genomics for our faculty and doctoral students last March. 4th years will now have 1 credit of current issues to include a genetics/genomics content. We have offered a new Care of Older Adult for 2 years now as well.

- My office was funded to organize and implement a new event for recognizing Excellence in Clinical Teaching with an August 17 Rotunda Dinner, keynote by Professor Judy Sands. The recipients are part of an inaugural teaching program sponsored by the Class of 1959 Anne Pollock Hemmings fund. This fund also supports a scholarship for graduating 4th years each year and Serena Knick of Lexington received the first award.

· SON has received the HRSA grant funding for scholarships (Hysell PI) and for the MSN (Glick PI) for Rural, Psych Mental Health Course online and supporting Community Public Health Leadership and Health Systems Management.

On a personal note, I was supported by President Casteen and the Dean to attend Harvard's Institute for Higher Education Management Development Program (MDP) during June in Cambridge, Mass. This is a great program and I am grateful for the support I have been given for my career and personal/professional leadership development

Funding:
- Our Jefferson Trust proposal was funded to provide research teams for Summer 2010 including undergraduates, graduates and faculty.

- Lancaster Funds recipients continue to be very successful and grateful for those funds!

Proposals:
SON has a grant under review by the Parents Program to support a pilot using iTouch/iphones in the Health System.
Faculty will have a chance to see the Resources before the Faculty organization meeting in October.

Academic Programs updates
1. Classes have been going for 4 weeks at this point! Take a breath and celebrate that success. Time to review the Spring assignments soon by going to the UVASON Registrar's webpage. Note we are now using University guidelines for start times of our classes to ensure proper usage of the classrooms.
2. Student Information System (SIS). To implement a new system of this magnitude is commendable and we had some rough patches along the way. Thank you for your patience.
3. OASS staff did a fantastic job this summer with orientation of new students (undergraduates and parents starting July), leading the way for common reading experience (My Sister's Keeper) and working closely to "fix' SIS issues for faculty and students. OASS managed to throw in a Summer Picnic for all at the Dean's home Sunnyside! New Registrar start date September 14. Greatly appreciate everyone in OASS filling in while the position was vacant.
4. McLeod Hall renovations took room 1006 offline. We are thrilled that the design for Java City and Bleecker Street worked out so that our students, staff and faculty and visitors will have a lovely area for collaborative ventures in 2010.

Compassionate Care: Students and Faculty are invited to join together on Tuesday October 13 from 9:30 - 11:30 in the McLeod Auditorium with Roshi Joan Halifax who will be discussing compassionate end-of-life care. Roshi is very engaging, articulate and, most of all, compassionate. We are hopeful that many nursing students as well as clinicians from a variety of disciplines will be able to take advantage of this opportunity. 12. iPhone or iTouches: These will be the official PDA requirement for those using PDAs in the future in the health system. The SOM site is up and we are working on ours. UVA Collab is the software we are using to communicate to students instead of email via the Registrar and the Office of Student Admissions and Services (OASS). It also the course management software we are using in all courses. It allows faculty to upload the syllabus. Please note the syllabi are available to any uva login through the Student Information System (SIS). The other features of UVA COLLAB allow the faculty to see pictures of those enrolled in class, start a discussion or use Forum for formal threaded discussion. It has a link to iTunes U and faculty can upload video or audio podcasts easily. Resources folders allow faculty to upload materials week by week or by topic. Other features include the ability to order books and submit grades.

State of the School

Last year, August 2008 I suggested that this was to be the year of the dance, and ended my remarks by offering to look for the Dance Opportunities with the faculty. Little did I know, some guy named Matt would travel the world dancing for Stride Gum, taht the "I Do" wedding video would become viral, we would lose Michael Jackson who created the moondance and thriller along with so many more dances from "my day." So, with the Year of the Dance gaining momentum, perhaps this is the decade of the dance. We'll see!

My new prediction is the year of Twitter. At 140 characters, we are seeing twitter use in the population over 25 and interested in promoting something: prayer, a book release, cupcakes and newspapers are starting to be top tweets. More to come.

Course Schedule for 2010 Spring, Summer and Fall

Now is the time for the School of Nursing to prepare the system with the information needed for Spring 2010 course scheduling. This goes in early so that rooms can be assigned. By mid term, students will be allowed to register for Spring classes, so our goal is to 1) get the classes in the system at the right time and with the right estimated number and 2) get the classes assigned to faculty who will teach them. This is a multi step job and we will begin this tomorrow. First the Program Directors review the changes in curriculum, review possible changes in time alloted based on end of program or course evaluations.

We have a fabulous group of new Graduate Teaching Assistants who began today with half day of orientation and attendance at the Dean's State of the School. We have so much talent in addition to incredible nurses... we have a former Sil, a cast member of Rocky Horror, a biker or two and a couple runners, an organic farmer, a beekeepers wife, 2 from Bedford and lots with Rural Health care interests. We have a twin who married a twin, one who speaks Mandarin and one who speaks Korean and about 5 conversational Spanish. We have a Canadian and a couple from New Y or New J, We have one just back from the Congo and a couple from Peru. We have a slew of Pediatric nurses, some community health and a few med surg. We have 1 CNL, 1 DNP, 1 FNP in the PhD program and a couple or 4 BS to PHD students. Several in the Masters Online program, two or so Acute Care. We have people who have incredible experiences in life and in nursing. I welcome this group to the School of Nursing!

General Strategies for cultural sensitivity discussion and prompts

Refrain from remarks that make assumptions. “Now when your parents were in college.”
Use terms of equal weight. Men and women.
Recognize students come from diverse backgrounds, may not be visibly apparent.
Avoid comments on students social activities.
Convey same level of respect and confidence in abilities of all students.
Avoid singling out students as spokespersons.
Speak up promptly if a student makes a distasteful remark.

I have been working with two other schools SCPS and SEAS along with ITC advisory committee to find a solution to having training synchronously (at the same time, just in different places).

The product is web based, not room based, so it is also a solution for synchronous distance learning classes. Collab is still a good choice for online learning that is asynchronous.

For these sessions, we will be using Elluminate as a web-based platform for teaching from your office to students in other places.

Starting September 4, faculty will be invited to join a Friday afternoon session at 2:30 in which we will use Elluminate from anywhere (home, office or scheduled room) to discuss ways to use the product.
Please look for information on September 1 with a link to log in to the session.
What do I need?
Faculty will need to make sure the computer they are using has an active Microphone and Speakers or a headset. Cameras are not necessary (we know what you look like)!
You will need an internet connection.

Look for more information after the first day of classes.

above and beyond: how lift plays a part

One of my goals in my role as Associate Dean for Academic Program has been to reward teaching clinical excellence. Now with the generosity of the Anne Pollock Hemmings Fund sponsored by the wonderful class of 1959, we have this opportunity to recognize, reward and nurture those who go above and beyond in helping our students become excellent clinicians.

The inaugural year, we will bring back Serena Knick, alum and first student Hemmings recipient. She will be joined by 9 faculty and 3 clinical faculty or preceptors and their guests. The Rotunda Dinner event, August 17, honors the following faculty:
Marianne Baernholdt, Tina Brashers, Cathy Campbell, Sarah Delgado, Regina DeGennaro, Beth Epstein, Rebecca Harmon, Carol Lynn Maxwell-Thompson, Dorothy Tullmann. We also will honor the long time service and high evaluations of Grace Muro, Sharon Bragg and Sophie Schorling as clinical faculty and preceptors working with us closely.

Graduate Teaching Assistants

The GTA model for the School of Nursing has changed over the last couple of years.
Now students are assigned courses and work closely with a course professor. Assignments are made by the Associate Dean for Academic Programs (ADAP).

All GTA's will attend TRC workshops August 19 and 20.

They will attend two mandatory orientation sessions with the ADAP: One on August 24 from 10:30 - 1 pm and a second one mid semester to be planned.

In addition, we will offer monthly teaching talks and a mid semester review dinner.

GTAs are invited to join the School faculty and staff for the Dean's State of the School Address.

Undergraduate Research: Jefferson Trust

A team of us have been working on increasing the number of undergraduates who participate in research through consecutive semesters rather than a one course in the curriculum. We have received funding for one year of a multi year project that we hope will become sustainable after 4 years.

The design of the Jefferson Trust proposal is to introduce our amazing first year students (who come to us from high schools and have already accomplished so much in that setting). Through this, we will connect students with the faculty's research earlier, so that by the third year, the student is part of a research team in a way bench research works. This applied research model will include practicing clinicians, nurse faculty, graduate student mentors and undergraduates.

More details to follow! Look for RFA for summer student funding opportunities. We are also shopping the proposal to other places to get more teams!

Gardner's Five Minds for the Future

Lancaster Award on Reflection in Leadership: Use of Journaling.

Lesson one comes from a Harvard Businesss Press book. Howard Gardner (2008) presents five minds essential for the leader of the future. The disciplined mind, the synthesized mind, the creating mind, the respectful mind and the ethical mind.

The disciplined mind can be thought of as a paradigm, a way of thinking..
The synthesizing mind pulls together large amounts of information into a purposeful way for knowledge (see my def of informatics).
The creating mind, (see Ted talk on this) is about wanting to make things better.
The respectful mind, (see cultural competency and diversity and inclusivity issues) accepts differences and values those who have differences in a genuine effort to understand others.
The ethical mind involves a sustained committment to do good, altruism, team playing and collequality and finally generousity of sharing with next generation (ex of Yo-Yo Ma).

As a leader in this discipline, reflect on ways you think your family, the School of Nursing, the University and other institutions help you nurture these capactities in your own development.

NOTES and PROPOSAL FOR TRAINING FOR ALL TO REVIEW
Our representatives are Reba Moyer Childress and Linda Peffley-Firer. They will work with Ms. Frankfurter, Ms. Westley and Ms.Glassberg to coordinate the training for our clinical faculty and students. The launch date is March 2011. Working back, Reba and I have tentatively planned a proposed EPIC Training Session Schedule. This is subject to change but we ask that people start to think about this now in planning for the future. It will involve completion of CBL's and 16 hours of hands on training. Thus we will start with the NUCO 2310 (former 303) in January for second year students. Then we will move to the Third year class in NUCO 3100 (former 331). The fourth year students will have training in March prior to their synthesis practicum, and only if assigned to the Health System. Clinical faculty will have separate training as well as opportunities to train with their student clinical group.

PLAN to achieve training by March 2011.

Each year the BSN Program Committee hosts a clinical faculty meeting. This year, the morning portion will be held for new clincial faculty only followed by lunch and a full orientation with returning and new clinical faculty as well as course professors of clinical courses.

Several faculty braved a hot day in July to attend a demonstration of the new Electronic Portfolio feature of UVA COLLAB presented by Yitna Firdywek of ITC and TRC. Members attending include: Profs Sands, Utz, Haugh, Reid, Drake, Cox, Friberg, and incoming single course faculty and advisory board member, Sharon Fay.
All faculty interested in joining this task force on preparing program level matrices for the portfolio development can attend the next meeting, August 31 at 3 pm.

Common Reading Experience: August 24

The U.Va. Nursing School's "common reading" program, going on for 10 years, features another interesting female character, Anna Fitzgerald, in Jodi Picoult's "My Sister's Keeper," recently released as a major motion picture.

The novel is about a girl who, at 13, sues her parents for the right to make her own decisions about how her body is used when a kidney transplant is planned in order to potentially save her older sister.

The common reading program was originally conceived as a way to get students to think and be excited about health care in broader terms, looking at ethics, policies and practices; to create a sense of community among incoming students by putting them into small book discussion groups; and to make it easier for students and advisers to get to know one another, said Theresa Carroll, assistant dean for undergraduate admissions, who will prepare a list of questions to guide the discussions during orientation in August.

The selection is made each year by the BSN Program Committee.

A flurry of activity in the Student Life Center as the OASS staff helped orient and register first years. Dean Carroll, Program Director Drake and I welcomed and provided information and reassurances to the incoming class parents and families. It is always such a pleasure to meet parents during this exciting transition in their lives. We will have an awesome first year cohort! Move in day is August 22, avoid McCormick Road area that day.

On reflection and cogitation

For the last 2 weeks I have been going about my daily work (and home) life with a mind toward the fact that I will be leaving soon for the Harvard Management Development Program (MDP). My excitement grows this week as the program officer sends out a listserv and we each send a short note of our arrival time and means. Safe travels we all say. We are all excited about what we will learn from each other and a little impressed with the diversity of the group... music, business, athletics, development, sciences and arts... and nursing. I am thrilled to be part of this Interprofessional Group of leaders. I have so much to learn and so many questions. I am especially eager to have time for reflection between the sessions. We have a full day for a full 2 weeks. That part is not new. My days are full every day. What is new is the time for reflection in between. Now I rarely have time to shoot off an email or note in between appointments. To be able to actually cogitate (as my Yale mentor John Young taught me) will be a treat.

So I'm off to reflect and cogitate!

Something to consider
Our society went from Radio to TV. So it seems natural to think that a podcast with video is better than a podcast with just sound. But our society has also moved to mulitasking and mobility. So a podcast with quality sound is quite popular and has great appeal. So, contrary to what you might think, the state of the art in higher education is moving to a standard where the SOUND QUALITY is the most important element. I recently helped finance and arrange for a Video of a classroom in action. The course professor and guest sat in front of the classroom and talked. Sometimes the audience (students in the classroom) talked. It was high cost to produce and the video quality was fine, but no value added. We are finding that if you know what the professor looks like, you don't need to see him or her for an entire 2 hours if they are just sitting. If they are using a ppt or keynote presentation you still don't necessarily need to see them, just the slides and HEAR them well. So, i am working closely with our ITC folks on ways to use GOOD QUALITY sound with making our courses more exciting.

Tips

How to:
I recently used the flip cam to capture video and sound of a guest speaker. Then I uploaded the clip to my computer. Flipcams save files in AVI.
To move this to ITunes, I had to open the file in QUICKTIME and export to ipod version before uploading to the iTunes site. I have placed this file in the NURS FAC/STAFF collab site for you to preview. The file is called VUSI.

Technology in the Classroom

GTA Ryan Gorman has created a web site on the NERC website which shows classroom technology and has helpful tips for those of us teaching in the classrooms.

Case: Screen needs to go up to use the white board!

This semester I taught in CMN Room 1120 weekly. Every week I have some issues. First the screen would not go up despite turning the program off at the console. So i tried to manually use the buttons on the wall. No luck. So I called 4-8686 and our wonderful MIS team came into the classroom and found that some of the cables had been replaced to the wrong place. I was able to keep teaching my class and their prompt response allowed me to put the screen up so that my students could come up and create their concept map using colored markers.

Case: Sound needs to work when you play a video clip

This semester my students created 2 minute video clips. Now I know to go into the classroom 10 minutes early and check out the sound before class. This gives me a chance to call our wonderful MIS team at 4-8686 to come troubleshoot before I need to show the clip.

Case Macs need a special dongle to project to the overhead/ PC laptop users need to know what Function key works to show the screen online.

This semester some of my students created their project on a Mac and thus needed to bring their own dongle. I let them know and I also carry a couple types in my toolbox. If you ever need to borrow one, my toolbox is a small metal box in my office.

In my Teaching Toolbox I carry: Chalk, white board markers, a flip cam, a couple extra iClickers, some clicker batteries, extra number 2 pencils and a microphone that connects to the mics in the classroom for people like me who need assistance with projecting voice in a large room. If you need to borrow any of these supplies, let me or Della know.

Hemmings Award

The School of Nursing will be able to highlight Clinical Excellence thanks to new award in honor of one of our alum, Anne Pollock Hemmings. A fourth year and CNL graduating student will receive $250 for Clinical Excellence. In addition, the Academic Programs will sponsor the first ABOVE AND BEYOND Awards for Clinical Excellence. Recipients will include faculty and preceptors who receive high marks for teaching in clinical excellence over the past year. The first dinner will take place August 17.

Face of UVA research

In the projects, students created 2 minute video clips of their favorite UVA researchers and submitted them to the VP for Research contest showing the FACE OF UVA RESEARCH via You Tube.

Preceptor Task Force

Thanks to the good work of faculty from across programs who came together this semester for the Preceptor Task Force staffed by Brian Reed, Curry PhD intern.

The committee represents DNP, MSN, CNL, RNBSN, BSN programs and includes faculty who have met and worked on the task:

The group was tasked to look at ways the School can respond through our Continuous Improvement Progress Report (CIPR) to the CCNE standard II which addresses preceptors.

STANDARD II-E. When used by the program, preceptors, as an extension of faculty, are academically and experientially qualified for their role in assisting in the achievement of the mission, goals, and expected student outcomes.
Elaboration: The roles of preceptors with respect to teaching, supervision, and student evaluation are clearly defined; congruent with the mission, goals, and expected student outcomes; and congruent with relevant professional nursing standards and guidelines. Preceptors have the expertise to support student achievement of expected learning outcomes. Preceptor performance expectations are clearly communicated to preceptors.

Charge to the group:
How does your program use preceptors
How are they selected?
How are the roles of preceptors with respect to teaching, supervision, and student evaluation clearly defined? What documents clearly define those roles? How are those documents updated? Are they consistent?
Are the roles congruent with the student outcomes? how documented?
With standards and guidelines? How documented?
How do you know they have the expertise to support student achievement? How are the preceptors evaluated? How are the expectations communicated to the preceptors?

Deliverable:
A document answering the questions and other questions you generate. Appendices with tools.
A chart outlining how documents are updated and consistent.

Navy Fleet Opportunity

2. Students have voiced concern that some faculty are still using Toolkit or Blackboard. The stats above indicate our students are using UVaCollab for many classes.

3. The School Registrar and OASS communication to students now all goes through UVaCOLLAB, so every student, regardless of the program, receives vital information on the collab. Your course would be another way to increase efficiency and productivity.

4. The University offers many faculty demo sessions and the School has offered sessions here in the buildings for your convenience.

5. For Blackboard users: it is likely you will not be able to get your materials out after the license expires in the Spring. Moving those over now will help you avoid last minute crises.
